Crafting a Bank-Ready Business Plan for a Budding Entrepreneur
The Challenge: A passionate cottage kitchen owner had a fantastic business concept but struggled to organize her extensive plans and financial details
into a coherent, bank-ready business plan.
Our Solution: We collaborated closely, taking her well-developed ideas and structuring them into a comprehensive business plan, complete with robust
cash flow projections and detailed financial analysis. This involved several strategic sessions to organize her existing materials and fill in any gaps needed for lender review. We focused on clarity, completeness, and making it easy for a banker to understand her vision and financial viability.
The Outcome: Within two months, she had a full, robust business plan. She is now meeting with bankers for equipment loans, has a detailed backup plan, and has just signed a lease to begin prepping her new commercial kitchen for opening in a month or two. She’s moving forward with confidence and a clear financial roadmap.
Streamlining Growth and Onboarding the First Employee
The Challenge: A business owner was working over 80 hours a week and recognized the need to hire their first employee to scale and improve their quality of life, but was unsure of the financial and practical aspects of bringing on staff.
Our Solution: We started by deeply listening to their needs and wants for the new hire. We then financially modeled the full cost of the new staff member, outlining the impact on profitability and cash flow. Once the financial feasibility was clear, I developed a comprehensive hiring package including a customized job description, job posting, and position agreement. I also created essential onboarding materials and an employee manual. Throughout the process, I provided support during the interview and hiring phases.
The Outcome: This client successfully hired their first employee, and things are running smoothly three months in. The new hire is a valuable asset, and the owner has gained significant time back, improving both business efficiency and personal well-being.
Navigating Complex HR & Culture Challenges (Ongoing)
The Challenge: A client was experiencing escalating staff culture issues, initially perceived as salary-related, but deeper review revealed a complex web of communication breakdowns, outdated management styles, and non-compliance with recent legal changes. Their existing employee handbook was also severely out of date.
Our Solution: We conducted confidential meetings with both owners and staff, carefully reviewing all compensation structures and uncovering the true extent of underlying cultural and leadership issues, while maintaining anonymity for all parties. We immediately addressed critical leadership issues related to new legal requirements and worked to modernize management styles. A full revamp and update of the employee handbook was initiated. To foster ongoing communication and problem-solving, I introduced the “Whys” process for collective problem resolution and implemented daily “huddle” meetings for streamlined communication and stress-free deadline achievement.
The Outcome: This is an ongoing transformation. The owners are actively implementing new leadership approaches, the employee handbook is being updated, and the new communication strategies are building a more transparent and collaborative environment, moving towards a healthier and more productive staff culture.
Addressing Workplace Conduct & Safety Issues
The Challenge: A client faced a direct HR issue in a warehouse setting where staff members were watching TV on their phones and listening to loud music during work hours, creating significant safety hazards and impacting productivity.
Our Solution: I worked with the client to understand the scope of the issue, reviewing existing policies and developing a clear, actionable plan. This involved discreet observation, direct communication strategies, and outlining the necessary policy reinforcements and consequences. The focus was on ensuring a safe and productive work environment while adhering to fair HR practices.
The Outcome: The client was able to effectively address the workplace conduct issues, re-establish clear expectations, and significantly improve safety protocols and productivity in the warehouse.
Guiding New Ventures Through Business Planning & Legal Review
The Challenge: Two new startups needed comprehensive business plans and cash flow projections. One of these startups faced a critical legal hurdle: potential breach of a non-compete and non-solicitation agreement from previous employer, with only six months remaining on the agreement and investors already involved.
Our Solution: For both startups, we developed robust business plans and detailed cash flow models, providing a clear financial roadmap. For the second startup, I facilitated a critical review of their unique service offerings against the existing non compete/non-solicitation agreement, recommending specific legal counsel for clarification and strategic advice. I worked closely with them to assess the risks and opportunities before proceeding with their venture, especially given the investor involvement.
The Outcome: Both startups are now equipped with solid business plans and financial projections. The startup with the legal challenge gained crucial clarity from legal review, allowing them to make informed decisions about their next steps with investors, mitigating significant potential legal risks.
Empowering Business Owners Through Valuation & Strategic Insight
The Challenge: A business owner initially wanted to sell their company and engaged us for a business valuation, preferring to sell it themselves throughan industry website rather than hire a broker. This client also needed a succession plan developed for their partner’s review.
Our Solution: We conducted a comprehensive business valuation, utilizing industry-accepted methodologies, and developed a detailed succession plan. Throughout this process, we provided deep insights into market dynamics and the true financial drivers of their business. As a crucial part of our service,
we connected them with essential contacts, including legal counsel and financial advisors, to ensure your valuation is comprehensive, defensible, and perfectly aligned with your strategic goals.
The Outcome: After receiving the valuation and engaging in the strategic discussions around it, the owner realized they weren’t ready to sell. Instead, armed with new insights into their business’s value and financial potential, they decided to implement new growth strategies. By changing a few key operational and financial aspects, the owner is now in a much stronger
financial position, feeling less stressed and more empowered to grow their business further.
From Financial Frustration to Dream Home
$50k annually (effectively $12/hour each for a couple working full-time), leading to significant personal financial stress. They simply couldn’t get ahead.
Our Solution: I reviewed their last three years of financials, confirming their struggle. I identified key areas jumping off the page – such as poor pricing, inefficient purchasing, and poor expense control – issues that the Profit Mastery University roadmap specifically addresses. I encouraged them to enroll in the full Profit Mastery course. As they progressed through each
chapter, they experienced numerous “aha!” moments.
The Outcome: By gaining essential financial skills through the course, their business improved dramatically. Over the next year, their financial stress melted away, they thrived personally and professionally, and they even achieved their dream of purchasing a new house. They learned their numbers, wrote their own growth story, and truly began to thrive.
Unlocking Strategic Pricing & Financial Confidence
Our Solution: She attended one of my free introductory classes about Mark-up and Margin, where we also discussed break-even analysis. During the class and subsequent discussions, she grasped several key concepts. Encouraged by this initial learning, she continued to attend other specialized classes.
The Outcome: Today, she deeply understands her business financials and can make strategic, confident decisions about her pricing. She no longer struggles with bill payments and is successfully running a profitable business by understanding her numbers story.
Funding Growth Without Debt – Understanding the "No"
Our Solution: Through the classes, especially Profit Mastery, she learned about “financial gaps” and the critical importance of financial ratios. She learned how to interpret the bank’s perspective on her numbers.
The Outcome: She now clearly understands why the bank initially said no. By applying the skills learned in the classes – reviewing her ratios, meticulously
tracking financials, managing receivables and payables – she was able to fund her expansion without needing a traditional loan and successfully paid off the high-interest line of credit. She mastered her financial story and gained complete control.
Transforming Frustration into Functional Systems
The Challenge: A very frustrated business owner felt constantly undermined at work, believing his employees were “lazy and dumb” because they weren’t following his unstated expectations. This led to frequent outbursts of anger and high employee turnover.
Our Solution: After listening to his frustrations, I asked both him and his staff (separately and confidentially) to document all of their daily frustrations for one week. Upon reviewing the feedback, it became clear that the majority of these “frustrations” were simple, common-sense issues stemming from a complete lack of documented policies and procedures.
The owner, unknowingly, expected his staff to read his mind. Drawing on the principle from The E-Myth — “Systems run the business, and people run the systems” — I recommended that both the owner and the supervisor attend the Systems and Process Workshop. Together with the staff, they began addressing every identified frustration by building a comprehensive operations manual.
The Outcome: The transformation was remarkable. With clear policies and procedures in place, communication improved dramatically. Both the owner and staff became noticeably happier and more productive. The business now runs on well-defined systems, resulting in a more harmonious and efficient workplace.
Streamlining Operations for a Service-Based Business
The Challenge: A manager at a local service-based business was facing persistent issues: customer complaints about slow service, high employee turnover due to frustration with inefficient workflows, and rising operational costs driven by rework. While they recognized that their processes were clunky, they couldn’t clearly identify the bottlenecks or how to resolve them effectively.
Our Solution: The manager enrolled in our Six Sigma Green Belt Training Program, drawn by its emphasis on practical problem-solving and process optimization through live, interactive sessions. Throughout the program, they learned to rigorously define their service delivery process, measure performance at each stage, and use data analysis to identify the true root causes of delays and inefficiencies. They also gained hands-on tools for identifying waste and implementing effective countermeasures. The group discussions were especially valuable, offering a safe and collaborative environment to brainstorm tailored solutions with peers facing similar operational challenges.
The Outcome: Armed with these new skills, the manager successfully implemented improvements, including streamlining the customer intake process and optimizing task assignments. As a result, the business saw a significant reduction in service delivery time, fewer customer complaints, and a noticeable boost in employee morale. Today, the business operates with greater efficiency, higher customer satisfaction, and lower operational costs — a clear demonstration of the real-world impact of applied process improvement methodologies.
